Word press is great for blogging
When I decided to launch our blog website Techisdom, I did not find anything as great as word press. Our entire website is made on it. I feel obliged to write a few words about it and its great features.
In simple words, Word press is most commonly known as free and open source blogging software and a content management system, made on a programming language PHP and MySQL. It is more commonly used as a blogging platform but its powers and utility is much more than that. You can see our entire website is made on it. It is just not limited to blog section. It provides various kind of themes and plugins while making website.
It was invented and released in May 2003 by its founders Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little. The content management system gives you lot of power to edit the content of your website without having the need of website designers or programmers. You can edit your own content while maintaining the entire schema of your website intact. Currently, it is the most used content management system across the world. As of August 2011, approx. 14.7% of total websites were using word press. It is believed that approximately 22% of new websites are using word press. It has gone through series of new versions. As of now the latest version applicable is 3.5.1 which was launched in Jan 2013.
World press has become most popular platform around the world because of the following reasons
- Free & easily available: – World press is a free and open source content management system. Since it is an open source which means the source code is available to you for being customized according to your need and specifications. Since it is freely available, you don’t need to spend money on getting own content management system developed for your own need which will do the similar function as word press already does. You are saved with the effort of doing things which are already done. Just download it and then it is available to use.
- Supported by worldwide community: - it is supported by worldwide community. There is the whole world which is trying to add new plugins; hence you are not on the mercy of your developer anymore. This saves lot of time, since you get benefitted by the work done all across the world on it. Your own developer would take lot of time for any new thing if you start on your content management system. Time is precious.
- Control over your website: – You get control over your website by changing content without having to depend upon your website designer and programmer. Gone are the days when each little change would have required long rounds of HTML coding. Your schema of website remains intact. In my own case, I upload new blog post myself without having to call my developer. This gives you complete control over your website.
- Wide range of templates available: – Word press provides a long list of themes and template among which you can choose. This can give you lot of flexibility to decide aboutyou’re your website should look.
- Facilitates media files: – It allows you to add media files like videos, pictures or audio in your post. This can give a great experience to the user of your website. You do not need to learn any new coding for this.
- Social media plugins: – it allows all of your post to directly embed with various social media pages like facebook, Google plus, twitter, Pinterest or linkedin etc. You can see all of them at the end of our post in our website. This can enhance the reach of your website and help in web presence optimization of your website.
- Facilitates two way interaction through comments: – It allows you to get comments from the readers on your post. It helps in engaging with visitors of your website.
- Filtering the comments through moderator : – You can avoid any spam comments on being published to your website by having moderator approval process. All comments coming to your website will come to you for approval. You can decide which comments to appear on your website. This helps in reducing the unnecessary bad experience on your website.
- Consistency in Schema of website: – At the time of adding each new post, your schema of website remains intact. This helps in consistency in appearance of website.
- Wide range of plugins: – Word press provides option to vide range of plugins which can provide lot of flexibility to you. You can see when you complete reading one post; you are advised by the word press to read another post of similar category. This is very interactive and adds value to website.
- SEO Plugins: – Word press is very SEO friendly. It gives you an option of using SEO plugins which are very friendly with Google indexing. I have noticed that our new post is indexed usually the very next day. It gives you an option to show a different title and description for SEO purpose. This helps you in getting the better search rankings.
- Faster content updating: – Since it becomes very easy for the owner of website to add content without waiting for designer, it inspires him to add more and more useful content on fast track basis.
- Liking by search engines: – Since you update content on fast track basis, this serve as an incentive to search engines to regularly crawl your website to show in their search engine results. The regular update shows a kind of seriousness on part of owner to show new and relevant content, hence search engines crawl them regularly.
- Category creation: – Word press support various category and sub category creation for the posts. When you create a new post you just need to select the relevant category. Your category status will get updated with the new post without any need of further complex programming. It has personally helped me a lot in creating different series on Devil’s Wisdom and Angel Wisdom which are mentioned in the relevant category of wisdom. This helps in easy navigation to the users.
- Search Option: – You also get the search option to look the content for the post of your choice. As an example, if you enter the Devil in the search box of Techisdom website. You will get all post which has devils written in it.
- Building contact us page: - you can have the contact us page made which can allow you to entertain query from your website visitors.
There are countless other benefits which a new blogger can derive while using word press. My personal opinion is to avoid spending money in developing your own CMS (content management system) for you blog and use word press instead.
